“NO LICENCE. NO FEAR. NO PHONES.”
Posted on: Oct 24

Bizzy B remembers the nights that built the underground.

Before TikTok DJs and USB sticks, there was a van — half-broken, loaded with gear — crawling down Lea Bridge Road toward a warehouse called Dungeons. Behind the wheel? A mate with no licence, maybe half-cut, but fuelled by pure rave intent.

That’s how Bizzy B and crew kept London’s illegal heartbeat alive in the early ’90s. No safety nets, no sponsors, just sound.

“You just did what you had to do,” he grins. “Didn’t think about the consequences — we just wanted to make it happen.”

Dungeons wasn’t legal — it thrived in loopholes. Promoter Lou played a constant game of cat-and-mouse with the council, filing for licences he’d never get, throwing “private parties” that packed out regardless. Each time the pressure rose, the place shut down. Then it came back again.

This was the pre-phone era: no livestreams, no self-conscious selfies. Just sweat, bass, and community. “You can’t replicate that,” Bizzy says. “It was real. People lived the music instead of filming it.”

The chat, part of Rendezvous Projects’ Dungeons Archive, wanders through memories of health scares, email threads, and the grind of preserving history. But Bizzy’s focus never slips — the story matters.

“Some heads never got a chance to speak,” he says. “This scene was a collective. It ain’t just my story.”

For anyone who ever felt the floor shake under an Amen break, Dungeons was more than a club. It was the sound of possibility — raw, unfiltered, and unforgettable.
